Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a Union and why is it important?

A Union is a group of workers who organize to make life better for themselves and for all the workers at their company.  We hold the agency accountable for violations of the labor contract and/or federal laws which affect federal workers.

What is the Master Agreement between the DVA and the AFGE?

The Master Agreement is the governing contract between the Department of Veterans Affairs and AFGE.  It is the authority that governs your working conditions and rights.

What makes AFGE different from other labor organizations?

We are a federal labor union.   Your Union Officials work for you in a voluntary status; we do not get paid any extra money and in addition to what we do as a volunteer, we also work side by side with you as other healthcare employees.  Additionally, as a federal labor union, it is illegal for us to strike.

How can I apply to be a union steward?

If you're interested in becoming a union steward, you will need to set up an appointment with a union officer to fill out an application.

Any active member may apply to become a union steward.

How do I get in touch with a union representative?

You may call, send an email, or fill out the "Contact us" form and we will be back in touch with you.  Currently, employees must make appointments to meet with a union representative unless otherwise approved.
